Shao Emerges From Ye s Shadow

Shao Yiwen, of Hangzhou, finally emerged from the shadow of 15-year-old four-title show-stopper Ye Shiwen to win gold of her own at the 7th Chinese City Games in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, today, an 8:25.21 victory over 800m freestyle keeping at bay the next wave.
Xin Xin, just 15, arrived at the Games with a best of 8:34.91, more than 10sec down on Shao at her best. Xin, of Jinan, leaves for home with a silver medal and a new personal high of 8:28.82, that confining to bronze Chinese champion Li Xuanxu, of Changsa, on 8:31.52.
In other action, the women's 200m backstroke podium prizes were keenly fought for 0.36sec splitting gold and bronze, the title to Chen Jie, of Wuhan, on 2:10.29 ahead of Yu Yaping, of Jinan, on 2:10.32, and Yao Yige, of Dalian, on 2:10.65. Chen and Yao had never broken 2:15 before, 15-year-old Yao's best a 2:15.62 from nationals back in April.
Zhang Qibin, of Zibo, challenged his own best, falling just 0.04sec shy with a 52.69 victory in the 100m butterfly ahead of Pu Xueyu, of Deyang, on 54.23, his first effort inside 55sec, and Jiang Huan, of Wuhan, on 54.60 and his first time inside 56.5.
The session came to a close with a 22.69sec victory for He Jianbin, of Guangzhou, in the 50m freestyle, the time matching his best from China nationals in April this year. Silver went to Zeng Xianliang, of Guangzhou, on 22.90 and inside 23sec for the first time, and Wang Qian, of Guangzhou, on 23.18 and inside 24sec for the first time according to results lodged by China with international rankings collators.
